For fans of alternative rock, pop-punk energy, and a heavy dose of chaos on stage, Beauty School Dropout have built a reputation for delivering high octane performances and a growing sense of community around their music.

At the center of that energy is drummer Colton Flurry, whose background in heavier music and sharp creative instincts help shape the band’s sound both on and off the stage.

In a recent conversation with Breakline Press, Flurry reflected on his musical influences, the chemistry within the band, and what fans can expect next.

A Drummer Rooted in Heavy Music

Flurry’s style behind the kit comes from years of playing heavy music before joining Beauty School Dropout. That background still informs the way he approaches rhythm today.

“I grew up playing a lot of metal and heavy music,” Flurry explains. “But I also have an appreciation for a lot of other styles, so it becomes this cool melting pot.”

That versatility has helped shape the band’s sound, blending punchy rock energy with a wide range of influences.

His path into the band was also rooted in long standing friendships. Flurry has known the members of Beauty School Dropout for nearly a decade, having previously played in another project with frontman Cole.

“We’ve been friends for almost ten years,” he says. “Cole and I started a project together called Strange Faces back in the day. A lot of the guys were involved in that too, so we’ve been playing music together for a long time.”

More Than Just the Drums

While his role in the band centers on rhythm, Flurry says his contributions extend beyond just what listeners hear on the records.

“I don’t really stop it at my playing ability,” he says. “I think I have a great perspective when it comes to style, fashion, and creative direction. That’s definitely something I bring to the table.”

That creative input reflects the collaborative nature of Beauty School Dropout’s songwriting process. Producer and bandmate Bardo often plays a major role in shaping arrangements, while other members contribute riffs, ideas, and sonic textures.

“Someone might have a riff or a production part,” Flurry explains. “If it feels right, we just start building on it.”

The Chaos of Life on the Road

For Beauty School Dropout, touring remains one of the most important parts of the band’s identity. Flurry says the goal every night is simple: bring as much energy as possible.

“We try to tear it down,” he says. “We want to bring as much energy as we can and make sure the fans have a good time and feel safe being part of the culture we’re building.”

Of course, life on the road isn’t always glamorous.

“One thing fans might not realize is that you don’t get to shower every day,” Flurry laughs. “It gets a little stanky sometimes.”

Influences Behind the Kit

Like many drummers, Flurry’s playing was shaped by a wide range of legendary musicians. Among his biggest inspirations are the late The Rev of Avenged Sevenfold, as well as Dave Grohl of Nirvana.

He also points to players like Danny Carey and legendary session musicians as key influences that shaped his musical outlook growing up.

Building the “Dropout Crew”

One of the most exciting things for Flurry has been watching the band’s fanbase grow into a tight knit community.

“We have a ‘Dropout Crew’ that comes to almost every show on every tour,” he says. “Seeing new people join that group and become part of the community is really exciting.”

For a band that thrives on live performance, that connection with fans continues to fuel their momentum.

What’s Next for Beauty School Dropout

With new music on the horizon and more touring planned, the band isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

“More music, more touring, more chaos,” Flurry says. “And a whole lot of fun.”

For listeners discovering Beauty School Dropout for the first time, Flurry recommends starting with one particular track.

“On Your Lips,” he says. “That one really feels like the cornerstone of the new direction we’re going in.”
